How do I
install (and remove) software to PDA?
If you need very basic
instructions about how to install any software to your Palm OS
device, please read this instructions.

Is there a
User Guide or a Manual?
Yes, there is a user manual
for BDIcty DIctionary. Find it
here or in every trial dictionary or phrasebook download.

What is
"BDicty"? And what are "Lexicons"?
BDicty
Dictionary is an application, a program. It is a specialized
program for working with dictionaries..
BDicty works with databases called dictionary lexicons
the same way a CD player works with CDs or the same way any
other e-book reader works with e-books; the difference is that
BDicty Dictionary works primarily with reference (dictionary)
content.
Lexicons are the reference databases for
BDicty Dictionary. A lexicon may contain, for example, terms
in one language and their translations in another, or their
definitions in the same language. At any rate a lexicon is a
simple map between a term and definition for it, whether in
the same or a different language.
It is important to state that each lexicon provides only a
single-direction relation between a term and article for it; a
bi-directional translation dictionary, for example, would
require two lexicons - one for each direction.
TO TOP
Public,
Demo or Commercial version?
BDicty has 2 versions - Public
and Commercial. The Public version is free and available for
download. It usually comes with the DEMO versions of the
lexicons we offer.
The Commercial version of
BDicty gives you the availability to add new words to your
lexicons, which the Public version misses.
The lexicons also
come in two versions - Demo and Commercial. The Demo lexicons
have only 10% of the entries of the full Commercial versions.
Unlike Public version of BDicty, though, Demo lexicons do not
make real functionality and should be used for evaluation
purposes only.

What are
the Extended and Gold lexicons?
Extended (or Gold) lexicons
are larger versions of Standard lexicons. When we release such
a version, we have to somehow distinguish it and usually name
the smaller one "Standard" and the larger one
"Extended" (or "Gold"). With some of the
lexicons, this could not be the only difference, though:
sometimes the Extended (or Gold) and Standard versions could
have different sources like it is for German lexicons, for
example.
TO TOP
Can I use more
than one lexicon (database) at a time?
Yes. You can use as many
lexicons as your Palm's memory allows you to. In fact, if you
want to have bi-directional dictionary (for example German -
English - German) you will need to have BDicty and 2 lexicons
in your PDA - En2Ger and Ger2En.
TO TOP
What do
I need to be able to translate from English to Other language
and vice versa.?
To have a bilingual
translation you will need to have BDicty and 2 lexicons
installed in your PDA. For example, if you want to translate
from German to English and English to German, you will need
En2Ger and Ger2En lexicons.
The best solution for this is to purchase a BUNDLE.
It includes be-directional dictionary and BDicty - the shell
program. So, you will have all you need at once, plus you will
get a discount.
TO TOP
How to
add new words?
First of all you need to
have the BDicty Pro version
($10). The adding/editing feature is not available with the
Light version.
If you already have it, you
may enter a new word by typing it the regular way as if you
search for it. Then tap on the field where its translation
should be and enter it. When done, you must tap on the (REC)
button that had appeared on the upper right corner of the
display.

Will it
work on Palm III? Palm IIIx? Palm m500? Palm Zire? Sony Clie?...your-new-PDA-here?
Chances are good it will.
BDicty was created for Palm OS 3.0 and as of this writing is
updated throughout all Palm OS versions and devices up to Palm
OS 5.3. Support for Palm OS 6.0 is in the works and may be
done by the time you read this.
There is one tiny catch here:
as Palm OS versions increase, BDicty Dictionary (and all other
applications) face the difficult problem of functionality vs
compatibility. Newer devices have newer OS versions which
often require things to be done differently than before, for
the sake of better performance or whatever other reason.
Having the same program make most of the new devices and old
devices comes at a cost and BEIKS sometimes is forced to cut
support for certain older OS features and versions; for
example, the current BDicty release as of this writing
(version 5.3) does require Palm OS 3.5 and higher as opposed
to 3.0 and higher.
If you have an older device
that the current BDicty dictionary says it does not support,
feel free to drop us a line and we will certainly send you the
latest versions that works properly on your PDA. Chances are
good it will be as useful to you as the current public one
which refuses to run on your PDA.
The reason is usually that we have opted to take advantage of
some new OS features to implement particular functionality
whereas in the "old" version of the program we would have done
them ourselves.

How to install
the files I received?
1. Download
and save the file to your local computer.
2. Installing
Software Files. You
are now ready to transfer the files from your computer to your
PDA. To complete this step, you will need to start the PDA
Desktop software that came with your PDA device. If you have
not installed this software before you will need to follow the
instructions that came with your PDA and install it on your
computer. It is
easy, just double-click on it.
NOTE: Some
mail clients and browsers tend to skip the file extension when
saving the file. As a result, when you double-click on the
file the shell of your computer can not determine the type of
the file. To resolve this, you should manually specify the extension
for each file. For Bdicty file extension is PRC -
BDicty.prc. For lexicons files extension is PDB - for
example English.pdb, or Ger2En.pdb etc. You will
need to rename the files before or after saving them, i.e. you
don't have to open your mail client and Extract or Save the
attachment again under different file name.
Then HotSync the files.
For more basic information you
can check
this instructions.

The file I have
downloaded is with the strange name (or the name Patch.EXE). Is
this right?
The files that we send and are
available for download are .PDB or .PRC files
not EXE or HTML files.

After
downloading it says "BDicty could not find any installed
lexicons and will not run!". Am I missing something?
When have only Bdicty on your
PDA you will see a note that no lexicons
are loaded. You need to have a BDicty
program as well.
BDicty is a program that works with databases,
called lexicons. To use it as a dictionary you need to
have them both - the lexicon and
the BDicty. You can use more than
one lexicon at a time. For example, to translate from English
to German and vice versa you need En2Ger and Ger2En lexicons
on your Palm.

What is my User
Name?
Many people say instead User
Name - HotSync ID, what is the same. It is the name
you entered when you first HotSync your PDA. Your User
Name (HotSync ID) can be found on the upper corner of your
PDA when you tap the HotSync icon. You will see it every time
you HotSync.
We need your User Name to
generate registration codes for the software and prevent
illegal distribution. For many users, this ID is simply their
own name. Please take an extra second to ensure that your
HotSync ID is entered correctly. Entering an incorrect HotSync
ID may cause the software you download to function incorrectly
or not at all.
If you do not know your User
Name (HotSync ID) you can check it with our
program TELL ID. Click on
it's name to download it. Then run it with your Pilot and it
will tell you your User Name.
TO TOP
I downloaded and
installed the file, but there is no icon in the Launcher; what
am I missing?
You are missing BDicty
Dictionary Reader.
Installing only the dictionary data file is as good as having
a CD without CD player or a Microsoft Word document without
Microsoft Word.
Put shortly, go
www.beiks.com/bdicty
and download/install BDicty itself, or, if it is part of your
order, make sure you have downloaded and installed it as well.
Note that you do NOT need to
pay for BDicty Pro in order to use the language lexicon you
have purchased; the Public version will be as good as the Pro
one as far as reading the content goes. It barely adds on top
of that.
TO TOP
When I run it,
it says "BDicty will not run. You may be running out of
memory..." I have plenty of memory!
Well, if so you probably gave
as a wrong User Name.
To check your user name 100% we created a small program TELL
ID. Click on it's name to download it. Then run it on
your Pilot. After you download and run it, please write
us with the exact message you get. We will send you
new files.
TO TOP
I run your
Russian (Greek, Turkish or Hungarian) dictionary, but when I
enter a word I only see gibberish.
What's wrong?
You will need localization kit
for some of the lexicons. Localization kit is a special PalmOS
for different languages. You may take a look at our Cyrillic
localization kit InterType.
